Creating efficient routines for children with ADHD to provide structure and trust
Morning Routine:
Homework Routine:
- Dedicated workspace and starting signal – switching on the lamp
- Set Time Frame: specific start and end times for homework.
- 2-5 mins breaks between tasks
- Check lists to track completed tasks.
- Immediate feedback, right after task completion.
Evening Routine:
- Limit screen time at least an hour before bed.
- Relaxing activities like reading or drawing.
- Consistent bedtime
- Prepare for tomorrow: together prepare clothes and pack school bags.
Weekend Routine:
- Consistent sleep schedule: keep the same wake-up and bedtime as weekdays.
- Structured activities: plan engaging activities to avoid downtime.
- Physical exercise: include sports, or outdoor play.
- Weekly review: discuss the upcoming week’s schedule on Sunday evening.
- Family Councils:
- Schedule family meetings at a set
- Inclusive topics: allow children to suggest topics and participate in discussions.
- Positive environment: incorporate fun activities and treats to make meetings enjoyable.
- Problem-solving: use this time to address any conflicts and plan solutions together.
General Tips:
- Visual Schedules: Use charts and visual aids for routines.
- Immediate Rewards: Implement a reward system for positive behaviour.
- Simplified Instructions: Break tasks into clear, manageable steps.
- Positive Reinforcement: Focus on praising good behaviour.
- Consistent Routines: Keep routines consistent to provide stability.
